Reisebericht von Marko Doboš zum Naturformen-Eintrag S. marmoreum ssp. marmoreum (dinaricum) from Mt. Velebit
S. marmoreum ssp. marmoreum, Mt. Velebit, CRO
Dear friends,
I just came back from 10 days hiking on Mt. Velebit (Croatia). Velebit is the longest Croatian mountain (145km) and it was my long time wish to make this hike. It stretches just near the coast, so the weather was sometimes really hot, but generally unpredictable just like in most high mountains.
Most part of Velebit is protected as nature park (Park prirode Velebit) and 2 national parks (NP Sjeverni Velebit and NP Paklenica).
On my trip I found many S.marmoreum subsp. marmoreum. Mountain is also reported habitat of J. globifera ssp. hirta and S. montanum, but I found none of the mentioned species. There is only 1 reported finding of S.montanum, and I'm sure it's a mistake. Unfortunately I had no time to visit this place, but it's on my list of priority.
S. marmoreum grows along the mountain, although I didn't recorded it in southern part, although there were favorable habitats and historical data. Maybe they are just hiding or could be extinct because of many mountaineers visting this area.
If you're gonna visit this area, please be careful because water supply on mountain is very limited, weather is unpredictable, there are venomous snakes (Vipera ammodytes is the most dangerous snake in Europe), bears, wolfs (not treat to humans), and part of the mountain is still under minefields so you should inform well first. I hope this above won't demotivate you :)
Velebit is really amazing mountain!! I will post more pics on FB
Enjoy the photos!

Dear Marko,
thank you for the report from Velebit mountains. You took pretty beautiful photos. I mention these plants as S. marmoreum var. dinaricum, they are really different from other S. marmoreum. Also their cultivation is more problematic, because they want drought (as you mention in the report).
Regards,
jezour
Lieber Marko,
LG,
jezour

I'm glad you like my report.
I had no special problems with cultivation of S.marmoreum where I live.

Dear Marko,
I have problems with cultivation (Pilsen, Czech Republic) of S. marmoreum var. dinaricum only during wet periods. If the plants are longer in the wet soil, they rot quite quickly.

jezour
Lieber Marko,

Hallo, dear Marko,
thank you for your wonderful pictures and the text. The plants are beautiful.
Also thank you, dear jezour, for your answer.
I'd like to take the pictures into our Naturformen-Lexikon. Marco, do you agree to the addition dinaricum?
LG

Jezour,
in longer period of wet conditions, I've noticed S.calcaruem rots more easily, but never actually had problems with S. marmoreum. Also, S.montanum doesn't like our summers.
At one point I've lost many of S.arachnoidem and it should be 'easy' species.
For me the key is is constant experimenting, having more than 1 pot of each specimen and of course exchanging plants when ever it's possible :)
Sempernicki,
I'm glad you like my photos. Of course, you can add f. dinaricum in Lexicon.
Here is another habitat photo from Velebit,
More habitat photos from other sites coming soon. Have a nice day
:)

Dear Marko,
thank you for next photos from Velebit.
During wet periods I have problems with S. marmoreum var. dinaricum from Orjen, MNE, if the plants are outside during wet periods. Maybe is there even drier in Orjen than in Velebit. I did not tested S. marmoreum var. dinaricum from Biokovo, maybe they would react differently.
The cultivation of houseleeks depends also on the location and weather conditions of the location, as you confirmed.
Regards,
jezour
Lieber Marko,
LG,
jezour
